This is an interesting concern. Today, I needed to go to Walmart to do my weekly shopping a few days later than normal. So, I got dressed, got Aftyn dressed complete with 2 pig tails and bows, and got our little 2 yr old friend dressed with hair done also. I was feeling pretty good, what with it being 9:30. So, off we went to our local Walmart.
For all who may not know, having 2 kids in a cart is quite the juggling act. I have, in the past, just kept Aftyn in her car seat and put her into the cart with the 2 yr old in the kid seat. It works, but it's hard to get a whole week's worth of groceries into a cart already pretty full with a baby seat.
Today, I decided to try Aftyn sitting in the kid seat with a blanket around her to cushion any possible tippage. We actually had no issues, even with the 2 yr old walking around holding my one hand and me pushing with the other hand. (Boy what a hassle this will be when I have 2 of my own - good thing I get to have some early practice.)
The real issue we had was random people walking up to smile at and talk to Aftyn, especially when I was away from the cart. Talk about making me nervous! Is this common and I never knew? Don't get me wrong, I appreciate all the adults and kids who commented on how cute she was and how smiley - who doesn't like to hear that? I'm just a little uneasy with strangers around my kids . . .
Do I need to make sure Aftyn is looking unkempt and scraggly to ensure my peace of mind? I know there must be other stories like mine, who wants to share?!?
* Aftyn wanted me to add that she taught herself how to blow raspberries last week - and she's been blowing them like crazy ever since. *

I guess to be able to answer this I would need to know if you were worried about her getting kidnapped or getting sick? I was always worried about my kids getting taken so to calm my fears I always make sure they're hooked in to whatever they're sitting in. I figured if someone really wanted them they'd have to figure out how to unhook them and by that time I'd be taking them down!
Here's a similar annoyance I have with other women in the grocery store: leaving their purse/handbag open AND unattended in the cart while they're at least 4 feet away from it! I walk past that situation every time shaking my head and thinking if I was a bad guy I could have made off with her purse just now!! I want to say something every single time, but I don't...
yeah, paranoid about the purse I had in the cart behind several items I was purchasing - so not an easy grab - plus not wanting Aftyn kidnapped or touched by strangers. And yes, you make a good point, I did have Aftyn buckled, so if a person wanted to kidnap her they would have to work super fast to get her without me jumping on their back.
I get this all the time with Charity. Part of me is like "Cool, they think my baby is cute. And she totally is!" The other part of me is like, "Dude, back away from my baby."
BTW- I used to grocery shop with 4 kids ages 0-4. What was I thinking?!
I always have at least two kids with me while shopping... and if Andy's with me, I have four. He is the worst person to go shopping with! Yes, I've told him that so I'm not bashing him behind his back. I ALWAYS get comments about my kids and I hate it when I'm in a hurry. I usually don't have that much time since I do it while Sammy's at school. That doesn't give me much time if I have other errands to do.
There was one time I decided to put Katie in the basket since she always cries by the end anyway, and Ashley complains from the beginning that her bumb hers while sitting in the basket. I kept telling Katie to sit down or she would get hurt. Yes, I had lots of people starring at me. "I'm sorry, but I'm in a hurry and she is old enough to take direction." I thought wrong. She fell out of the cart and landed on her head! I felt so bad and just held her the rest of the shopping trip. I later found out about another kid who did that and is now permanently handicap. Needless to say, she doesn't sit in the basket anymore. It's either the seat or walk beside me. That is why I LOVE Costco... two seats for the kids. Why doesn't every shopping cart have two?
Good luck to future shopping trips with multiple children. I haven't quite found it easier, yet.
