Aftyn is Awesome

I need an update on Aftyn!  Since starting kindergarten a few months ago, she has absolutely flourished!  Because she only has school a few days a week, (every other day) I've been trying to find ways to challenge her here at home. We read books almost daily, and she began taking piano lessons from my sister Laura a little over a month ago. I think she likes the challenge, generally, of piano lessons and wants me to listen every time she is practicing.

She and Bronwyn have been sharing a room again for about the last 2 weeks and generally it is going as expected. Bronwyn is an early and energetic riser and anyone saddled with her as their roommate will have to expect being woken up early and sometimes going to sleep late too thanks to her talkative ways. Mirren is grateful for the additional sleep she now gets, as we all are for her, and Bronwyn loves the addition of being able to listen to music with Aftyn as she goes to sleep. They've been listening to a kids classic Christmas CD and seem to rather enjoy it.
Thanks to that cd, Aftyn was introduced to the song "All I want for Christmas is my 2 front teeth".  Thanks to lots of encouragement and 2 very complying front teeth, 2 days ago she finally lost her 2nd front tooth so she can (and does) sing that song a lot! :) Aftyn is a worrier when it comes to losing teeth and has only managed to pull 1 of her teeth, leaving the pulling of the rest of them up to me.  She hates the sight of her own blood, it seems to make her worry that something bad and scary is happening to her body. Now that she can see the predictability of losing teeth, she frets less.

Aftyn is becoming a great reader and at grandparents houses is likely to have a stack of books in her lap and sitting on a comfy couch, perusing them all. Not necessarily reading them though. She loves to look at all the pictures too. :)
She is a huge help around our house, and generally very willing to hop up and help in whatever way I might be in need. She is an awesome example to her sisters in that way and I truly truly appreciate that about her and need to be better about thanking her for that. Bronwyn and Mirren are both great helpers because Aftyn is a great helper and sets a good example of how helping can be fun. And brings its own rewards.
Most recently, Aftyn is very proud of her basketball skills and dribbling the ball. I think this girl has some basketball potential in her future! Truthfully, whatever sport they are working on in p.e. is the sport she wants to be mastering here at home. She clearly has a desire to play sports and master things that she likes. I love that about her at this time in her life.

My Main Little Man

Lochlan is 2.5 months old. :(  It happened too fast!
Here are some of the things we love about him:

I insist on doing his hair after every bath. I don't get to put bows on him, so at least I can
decide what his hairstyle is going to be! It seems only fair! The girls love to watch me do
          his hair.

He has the cutest little smiles. He is definitely the easiest smiler we've had! He will be laying
in my lap, and I'll look down and he's just grinning up at me.  Also, sometimes when he smiles,
his ears move. I wonder if that means he'll be able to wiggle both ears. I've never noticed this
on any of my other babies.

He is quite the talker! He coo's and gurgles so sweetly. He has also started laughing!
I can't get enough of all his noises.  Except for his crying, but he still doesn't usually cry
a whole lot so I'm not terribly sick of it at this point.

The girls love when I get him all dressed up in something special. They have lots of things
to say about how handsome he looks.

Mirren calls him "Buddy".  And pats him hard, pokes his eyes, and smacks his poor little
tummy. Also, she makes his hands clap. LOL  But I figure it's better to let her feel a part of
him and keep helping her learn about being soft than to keep her completely from touching
him. She is still really good about him and loves him, but is still adjusting to not having
Reed and I always handy to help her when she feels she needs it.

His eyebrows and eyelashes are coming in reddish! I think his hair color may be permanent!

He started being able to bat at things this week, and rub his eye with his fist.

Reed gave him a bath today and we noticed that his ears stick out a little! I'm in cute stickie
         outie ear heaven! LOL  :)

TMI but hey my post: He is pooping once a week and has been doing this for at least a
month. It's gross and I wish he'd just poop once every 2 days or something. Maybe soon.

Some of his current nicknames: Lochie, Lochlan buddy, little man, Manny.

He's pretty long. 24 inches at this point. He's in 3-6 month clothes, depending on if they
are new or hand-me-downs and have been washed a lot.

Lochlan is such a sweet boy. I love him so much! He is so loved by us all. I'm so grateful
for his sweet calm happy spirit in our home and in our family.

Bronwyn in all her Glory

Have I mentioned our computer is still being dumb and won't let me upload pictures? Grrr....

Bronwyn is a sweet and busy 4 year old. Her most popular game right now is being a mom, with a doll shoved up her shirt because she's going to have a baby. She loves to pack a diaper bag with bottles and toys for her baby. She is a hard worker and best loves to organize things. She totally reminds me of myself.
She and Aftyn have recently moved back into a room together thanks to Bronwyn peeling paint off of my beautifully painted bunk beds, so now she and Aftyn will sleep in our newer purchased off craigslist bunkbeds that have no beautiful paint to peel. Bronwyn likes this because Aftyn gets to have music to fall asleep to each night, so now she does too. Bronwyn wants to grow up as fast as Aftyn and do all the big girl things she can do and she is waiting impatiently for the time when she can do them by herself. LOL  Like going to school, or picking up the baby off the couch instead of just holding him on her lap. Bronwyn definitely struggles the most with not being allowed the same privileges as Aftyn.
Bronwyn is the child most able to just play by herself in a space. She loves to go outside in the backyard and dig in the dirt, play some pretend game with sticks, or anything else. She finds friends everywhere we go and gives her heart very easily. She is so my child. She is so sweetly sincere in her intentions. She loves to do nice things for other people because that is how she shows love. She will help me do cleaning around the house with hardly any complaints but equally as likely to do something naughty as well.
Recently because of her peeling the paint from her bunkbed, she lost her Halloween privileges, something that broke her heart and made mine sad too. But she plucked herself right up when given the job of handing out the candy, and she loved being able to be in charge of it and getting to be her own boss. She tends to thrive in situations where she is given a job that she completely understands how to do, with clear boundaries and knows what is expected of her.
She also wants to boss people around and when pushed can be very sassy with adults, something we're trying so hard to teach her is wrong and that she needs to show people love by word and deed.  Bronwyn has a tough time because she has such a fun and playful personality, that people want to play with her and don't understand that if you give her an inch she'll take a mile. She tends to do better when playing with adults if they lay out the boundaries and rules for her first so she knows what is okay to do and what isn't and then she can have fun while knowing she is following the rules as well and won't get into trouble for something she didn't know she shouldn't do. Such as being sassy, jumping on people and hurting them, playing too rough. It seems self explanatory, but she thinks people want to play with her and that means she can do whatever seems fun to her without thinking of how it affects other people. In those situations when she's just playing and doesn't stop to think out the consequences of her actions and people get hurt because of her, it truly makes her feel so sad because she didn't know she shouldn't do something. I understand her personality so well because that was me as a child. I thought everyone loved me and so I could do whatever and people would still love me. Ha ha ha!!

She truly has the best of intentions and the biggest heart. She loves to love people. If you are ever sick, Bronwyn is the one who will come and tell you a story to help you go to sleep. She is a girl who loves to sing, and dance, and color and play. She is such an important part of our family and I can't imagine life without her!

So I had a baby. . .

So I guess we all get the point that I had a baby since my last post has sat there for approximately 2 months.
Thanks to some prodding from my sister, I am finally writing a new post.

Here is an update on Mirren:

Mirren has definitely hit the terrible 2's. Also, suddenly, her personality is blossoming from every corner of her body!  She has a loud voice, she loves to say "No!", and just for fun when she can she likes to run away from me but luckily those little toddler legs can only pump so fast. Toddlers run so cute. Her little run makes Reed and I laugh a lot. She's doing well with potty training and really tries hard in that arena. She has just started talking a lot, but also loves to spout complete gibberish as well, usually quite loudly with a smile on her face. She makes me laugh! For a girl who used to hate attention, she has become a very boisterous personality at our house. She recently loves animals that growl. Also, she has started loving to sit and play loudly by herself with animals, little people, babies with blankets, even inanimate objects. Her hair is still short and curly but luckily her curls have stopped looking so clownish and have grown a little longer. Mirren loves her baby, but gets frustrated sometimes when she wants my attention and I'm feeding him. She is always concerned when he is "drying" or crying and wants to make sure I am on my way to take care of him so he will stop. She still loves her binkies, and is especially attached to her pink baby blanket that she likes to drag around our house. I am always having to wash it because all of her love gets that blanket dirty a lot. I cannot believe her 2nd birthday is this week. She is a blessing to our family and we love her. I can't imagine having her stubbornly funny little self in our family!

Look forward to my next post about Bronwyn! Hopefully tomorrow!!

Post Edit: Mirren suddenly has so much to say and it's hilarious to follow her thought pattern. Just yesterday, the day after we celebrated her birthday, I woke up to the usual hubbub of my house, except this time Mirren was still super excited about her birthday and was playing with her balloon out in the front room. As I lay there just listening to her, I suddenly heard her say "Daddy".  Then "sleep" followed by the pitter patter of her little feet running down the hallway to my bedroom where I lay in bed sleeping just a few moments before. I lifted my head to see her sweet little smiling face at the end of my bed and when she saw that I was awake she happily cried "B'oon!!", holding up her birthday balloon by its string in her chubby toddler hand so I could see. Ha ha!! She still calls Reed and I mom or dad, doesn't seem to understand that there is a difference and it cracks me up.  She is so different from Bronwyn in her screamy happiness. Bronwyn does it to get peoples attention, but Mirren gets excited about things and is quite loud but it's not for attention, it's just genuine excitement. She was so excited last night to blow out the candles on her brownie, she just squealed and screamed on Reed's lap until we finished singing happy birthday and she finally got her big chance to blow them out. 3 tries later and she did it! She gets too excited when she gets to do the big girl things she see's her sisters do. :)  Oh my heart, she is so funny and sweet. "No" is her favorite word, but she just started saying "riddit" just like Bronwn did for frog sounds, loves to growl, insists on shoes and a jack jack (jacket) if she see's anyone even acting like they might be leaving, likes to watch movies especially Elsa, (Let it "go" with arms widespread). Her favorite church songs are Book of Mormon stories, I am a child of God, Sunbeam, Roll your Hands, the Duck Song "with the feather on its back", and probably any other song she's heard over and over. She likes to "sing" along to songs on the radio that I sing along to, and she is a girl who loves to dance to any old tune. Really! Her dances are so cute as most 2 year old dances are. ;)

Gotta Start Somewhere, Let's Talk Birth Stories

Holy cow, the weeks are flying by now that Lochlan is here. I've got to get caught up before I forget about posting some of the important stuff that's been happening the last few weeks.

So, post number 1.  Lochlan and how he finally came to be born:

A little backstory. I have never been a person who had regular Braxton Hicks contractions. If I had anything, they never even resembled contractions. I've had some crazy crampy stuff, but that's the extent of it and it's only been a little bit here and there. The last 2 weeks of Lochlan's pregnancy, I had what felt like real contractions many separate times, but at least 3 times that I was certain they were the real thing and made the trek  all the way to Boise, a 45 minute drive, from our house. Each time, I waited a little longer to verify that they were real. The last time we went in, I was having very real contractions and some serious achiness that felt as if I had just given birth.  My muscles and abdomen were SO sore the following morning, but I had nothing to show for all the work my body was doing, just a lot of sore muscles. It was the last time, when I was 39 weeks and 5 days pregnant that my midwife said, I can induce you tomorrow or the next day if that is what you want. I think maybe she was getting tired of all the early morning/late night phone calls from the triage in labor and delivery about me from the nurses there. Ha ha!!
At first I was resistant to the idea of being induced when there was no reason, clearly my body was trying to go into labor! I finally let go of my pride and stubbornness and just relented to the whole guessing game being over and just knowing that Lochlan would finally be born. I decided to just do the induction the very next day, just to get it done and over with as soon as possible.
Reed and I were surprisingly excited driving to the hospital the next morning after dropping off the girls at his parents house. It was nice because of Mirren's induction, knowing what to expect and not feeling like there would be any surprises. Little did I know there would be lots.
The gel that I can't remember the name of but is just like prostaglandin gel, was placed around 8 am by my midwife. I had no concerns or anything as they placed it, I was expecting contractions to start slowly and to just be like every other labor I had had.  That dream lasted all of 10 minutes when all of a sudden a crampiness like I've never experienced before started. It started out light but swiftly became a horrible side cramp on my right side that increased in pressure and pain. I started telling Reed "oh crap, this really hurts!"  which is so not like me. I don't like to say crap or to give in to the idea of something REALLY hurting during labor unless it REALLY really hurts. And oh boy did this really really hurt. For the next 20 minutes, I gritted my teeth, tried to breathe through the pain that had now spread over my entire abdomen and into my low back and did everything I could to just survive flat on my back in a hospital bed in a great amount of pain.

Things get pretty foggy in my memory as far as the order of it all because the pain was just so intense. The nurse came in, whether we beckoned her or she just came in I'm not sure, but as soon as she came in and asked me how I was doing, I started telling her how bad the cramping was. I asked her how to tell if the gel was stimulating too many contractions, and if that was the case, how to get them to stop. The nurse didn't seem to want to answer that question I'm thinking because I asked her the same question many times and never got a straight forward answer from her. I also asked her if my hands were supposed to be tingly. They were VERY tingly. Another nurse came in at some point and put my hand over my mouth to try to slow my breathing because she thought I was breathing too quickly/hyperventilating. And the baby's heart rate was being affected by the cramping/pain/rapid breathing going on as well. The nurses were VERY concerned about his heart rate because it kept dipping.
Very quickly I was racking my brain for any kind of pain relief that I could have. I remembered my midwife telling me about laughing gas now being available at the hospital, so I asked for it. I was desperate for anything to just get me through the cramps I was sure would be stopping anytime. The gas was set up fairly quick-ish, and I was grateful for it. Except it was in the form of a face mask that went over my mouth and nose and when I was breathing it in for a full contraction, it made my voice change. Also, the dang thing vibrated when I breathed through it and it was mildly irritating to me and distracted me from trying to relax through the contractions that had now started and the cramps from H-E-double hockey sticks. But otherwise I was grateful because it took the edge off the cramps and the contractions that were not giving me ANY breaks in between.
Sometime around this time, I finally managed to get out of the bed to help the baby's heart rate get higher and to help me cope with the contractions better by standing, and my midwife made it back into my room. I finally was starting to come out of the painful haze I had been in for maybe only an hour, the cramps were finally starting to be less painful, but the contractions coming so fast with no breaks were getting hard to deal with. I asked my midwife why the breaks weren't longer between the contractions. She said "well, your body was just ready to have this baby with all those contractions you've been having."  That's what I was thinking too at this point and cursing my body for being so ready because it was hurting pretty badly.
Around that time I decided it was time for the tub. The warm water and the jets usually make hard contractions pretty manageable for me and that sounded really good with these contractions that were so awful.  I felt like I was only in the tub for around 20 minutes, Reed claims it was closer to an  hour. Whatever. I'm not sure. But after what felt like a short time, I said, "holy cow, these contractions are hurting more and I'm feeling pressure. I think it's time to break my bag of water. I think I've got to be at an 8 or so."
Oh my. If only. By this point, my stomach and back muscles were so shot, I couldn't even manage to get myself out of the tub. Thankfully Reed was willing to help life me out but as he did so, he said, "uh oh Alysa, you're bleeding!"  I just calmly told him I was sure it was because I was going through some huge cervical changes which cause bleeding. Except when I sat back on the hospital bed so my midwife could check me, I felt a big gush of something. I quickly told my midwife and she said, "oh, it's blood."  She handled it all very calmly, but looking back now I see that she was very concerned. She checked me and informed me I was a 5. I started shaking my head in disbelief. She then said, I'm sure to calm me down, that going from a 3 to a 5 was a lot of cervical change and that was probably why I was bleeding. Except that I kept getting little gushes of more blood and that was concerning to us all.
Things get a little hazy again here because we were trying different positions to try and get the bleeding to stop and those positions were none too comfortable when I was still having contractions on top off each other. I think it was also at this point that my midwife suggested I get an IV put in to help re-hydrate me because I hadn't been drinking water through all this time and she was worried that if I lost a lot of blood and didn't have enough water that things wouldn't be looking so good. And it was shortly thereafter that she told me she thought that I might have an unidentified low lying placenta and that my placenta could be starting to pull away from the uterine wall, otherwise known as a placental abruption. That's about when things started to get very real and scary. She recommended that I get an epidural in case we needed to rush me to get a c-section if anything happened with the placenta and the baby. And she also said she was going to have the Dr. in her office come and take a look at me and give her his opinion on what to do for me. He quickly came and examined me, VERY PAINFULLY, agreed with her assessment that it was a placental abruption and suggested that we break my water and have me lay somewhat up and only lay on my back so that the baby's head could come down and push on the placenta and hopefully help stop the bleeding. He also said that the good thing was that usually with a placental abruption the body would labor more quickly than normal and we had that in my favor. And when he checked me he said I was a 5-6.  So we adjusted my position on the bed and waited for the anesthesiologist to come in to give me my epidural. At this point my body was so tired of the back to back contractions, the worrying about the baby being okay and the whole labor going so quickly and painfully, I was ready for the relief that I knew the epidural would bring from the pain.
The anesthesiologist came in and I got myself situated on the bed. The contractions were so bad I didn't know how I was going to get through the whole "curve your body around the baby and hold still so I don't stick this big needle into your spinal cord" thing. I made Reed sit in front of me because I absolutely HATE epidurals, mostly the big needle and anything that scary being near my spinal cord. I was breathing my gas the whole time and made it through it all. I still had about 5 minutes or so of painful contractions before the epidural kicked in. After the epidural kicked in, my teeth just kept chattering and chattering. My midwife said it was because the contractions were coming so close together that it was causing an adrenaline rush and that was what was causing the chattering.
It seemed like not much longer that I started feeling pressure. The pressure of what felt like the baby's head pushing against something, almost like it was stuck. I had 3 good contractions that felt that way, but around the 2nd one I made Reed push the nurse's button because on top of everything else I was scared the baby was stuck. LOL  A different nurse came in and I informed her I was worried about the baby, that it felt like his head was hitting something and I was feeling pressure to push. I was crying during this whole speech, and I finished off the whole thing with "I'm probably in transition because I always cry when I'm in transition."  And I kind of laughed about that because I didn't believe that could actually be true. That I could actually already be in transition. Luckily my nurse and my midwife showed up shortly thereafter and my midwife checked me. But not before I informed her that I thought it was time to break my water and she told me that the Dr. had already broken my water. Reed and I both laughed and were in disbelief because neither of us knew that it had happened. So my midwife checked me and said I was a 10. I couldn't believe it! Neither could Reed, who said disbelievingly, "it's time to have a baby!!". My midwife swiftly got things ready because I had also been having blood gushes again so she wanted the baby out as soon as possible. She put my numb legs up in stirrups and 2 contractions later with maybe only 2 good pushes from me, Lochlan entered the world, swiftly followed by my detached placenta.  I was just so grateful that he was finally out, that I knew he was going to be okay. He was breathing fine and other than the placenta chasing him out of my body, neither of us had any complications. What a blessing.

My whole labor, from start to finish, was 3.5 hours. Which beat my previous fastest labor by a good hour and a half. Lochlan made it into the world before lunch! Looking back on the whole morning, I was so so so grateful for a nurse and midwife who were able to be there the whole time, who were such a great team and who both took such great care of me and Lochlan. We were so blessed that my placenta hadn't detached at home, that we both were okay and that it all happened in the hospital and we had such competent people caring for us who caught the problem and helped come up with a plan that got Lochlan there safe and they were able to keep me from losing too much blood as well. There is no way I can think of the whole event and not know thoroughly how much Heavenly Father's hand was in the whole thing. I feel so blessed and watched over and I'm so grateful.

Sitting on 2 pillows

Why am I sitting on 2 pillows you might ask?

Because I'm 39 weeks, 3 days pregnant and my tailbone hurts.

Why am I posting this at 1:44 am?

Because Mirren is teething and woke up crying.

I stayed with her in her bed, trying to give her comfort until her Tylenol kicked in.

After an hour, I gave it up and left her on her own.

That girl has weird waking up in the middle of the night

and not going back to sleep for a while issues.

I think I'm just gonna let that be her problem tonight.

As you might imagine, I'm so done with being pregnant.

This boy is done growing.

He's great, he's fine. He'd thrive outside but to heck with that.

He's staying in, in spite of repeated efforts that my body has tried to eject him.

2 trips to the hospital already.

(1 more than I've had with any other pregnancy and I haven't even had him yet.)

Contractions stop or turn out to not be the real thing and painfully, slowly wither away.

Is he just holding out for September?

He doesn't like August?

Couldn't tell you.

I liked August, but now I'm growing bitter as I've watched the long hours of

the past week slowly drift by with no signs of our boy emerging.

Did I tell you I had a gut feeling he was going to come early? Around 38 weeks even!?!

Yeah, never trusting my gut again.

This boy will come, but the excitement of an "early" arrival is down the tubes and now

I just want him out.
