Let me tell you about this idea I have had for awhile. I want to perm my hair. I know, scary idea. After all, it could turn out looking like this perm I got when I was about 11.
Do you see the look of pain on my face? Yeah, I had that type of perm for a large majority of my elementary years. Thankfully, I think my hair was longer most of the time. That time was just unfortunate. By the way, notice my twin sister has the same perm and cut. We were big believers in share and share alike. :) Plus, I think my mom thought it was cute.
Anyway, I know more about perms now, I'd like to think. For example, you should always interview potential hairstylists before you get the perm, and you should always bring pictures of the types of curl you would like from your perm. Here's my picture. Minus the shoulder baring shirt and the straightened part of her hair. You gotta love her full glossy lips! :)

This is funny because I just got a perm last week. It didn't turn out so great. But I needed a change and didn't want to cut it so I am ok with that. (Steve likes my hair long.) I say go for it if you want a perm! I loved your photo by the way.
I think you'd look great with a good perm. Yes, definitely make sure the permist (i.e. stylist) knows what she's doing... bad perms are just that -- BAD. But a good perm is a great way to change things up a bit. I did a perm last year and really liked it. But when it's done, you have to post pictures to show, kay?
What a fun picture of you when you were younger! I spent most of my teenage years w/ long permed hair. I used to get those spiral perms that were popular way back when. I think you'd look very pretty w/ curly hair. I like the curls in the picture you posted, I just wonder if you could get those kind of curls from a perm?? Anyway, good luck and yes, post a picture for us to see.
Here's what I think. While the curls in the picture ARE very cute, they are not something you can achieve through a perm. Those are rollers or a curling iron. AND from someone who has had PLENTY of horrible perms in my life (see picture for proof), by not getting a perm then you can go from straight to curly whenever you want and you won't be stuck with just a curly frizzy mess (see picture for proof).
Yes, I must admit I know that that picture was of a woman with natural curls, supposedly. But, I need a change. I love my long hair, but it's sometimes too much work to curl it all up, which is where the perm would come in and do all the work for me, for a little while. I'm still thinking. It won't be happening for at least a month, so I'll have plenty of time to think. :) No worries.
Thought I'd give you a little more to think about since I am dealing with my new perm. Turns out I still have to curl it to make it look good and not just the wavy-wet-hair-gangster-look. BUT, the curls stay in better and look a little better if I go through the trouble of it. Still just as much work, but stays better. That's my story.
